The Departments of Teacher and Special Education & Mathematics at Central Michigan University invite applications for a fixed-term faculty appointment in mathematics education effective August 2024. Full-time fixed-term faculty are generally expected to teach four courses per semester. Courses may be face-to-face or online and at the undergraduate or graduate level. Fixed-term faculty may also: attend regular, relevant committee meetings; support committee work; engage in assessment of learning activities; help develop and promote CMU’s course offerings; and strengthen partnerships on and off campus.
The Teacher and Special Education department has an immediate need in its educator preparation program in the areas of exploring education and the teaching profession; reaching and teaching diverse learners; designing learning environments; developing effective teaching practices; analyzing teaching to improve student learning; and elementary and secondary methods. Moreover, this candidate may teach Educator Preparation Program courses within the mathematics department, including courses for PK and elementary education (focusing on the teaching and learning of counting, whole number representations, and whole number operations; negative numbers, fractions, decimals, percents, and proportional reasoning; patterns, shapes, measurement, and data, all with high-leverage teaching practices) as well as secondary education courses such as probability and statistics explored through a problem-based and technology-enhanced approach connecting secondary mathematics curricula with undergraduate mathematics and pedagogical content.This is an initial one-year appointment; however, reappointment is expected, subject to favorable evaluation and annual enrollment projections.

The Department of Teacher and Special Education currently has 25 Regular Faculty and 7 Full-Time Fixed Term Faculty members who engage in research, scholarship, and service across many sub-fields of PK-12 education. We have a vibrant undergraduate program for initial teacher certification, an alternative certification program, and four masters degree programs for practicing teachers who want to further refine their pedagogy. Our programs have been recently re-accredited for a seven-year cycle through the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation ( CAEP ) and our faculty actively incorporate Michigan’s’ Core Teaching Practices in their methods courses. The Department of Mathematics currently has 21 faculty members engaged in research in mathematics education, mathematics, and applied mathematics. We have a large mathematics education faculty group with research in equity, sociopolitical issues in mathematics education, ethnomathematics, beliefs, technology, mathematical knowledge for teaching, the teaching and learning of abstract and linear algebra, and the teaching and learning of proof.
